We have 2.5 hectares of land divided into three demonstration plots (PD) where we grow organic manila mangoes. We also have a vegetable backyard where we grow tomatoes, radishes, cilantro, and different kinds of lettuce, chard, string beans and other vegetables. We also have a vermicompost bed, laying hens and breeding sows. The production from the plots is for self-consumption and trade.
In the PD number 1 we have a building under construction for WWOOFers, with a room fitted out to share and to sleep on cots or sleeping bags. We have an eco-saving firewood kitchen, dry toilets and running water. We have no electricity or internet access.
Our town: Jalcomulco is a village of 4000 inhabitants located approximately 36 kilometers away from Xalapa, the state capital, in the high mountains region of Veracruz State in Mexico. The village lies at the bottom of the canyon and in the riverside of La Antigua River, at Los Pescados section. It has a warm, humid climate most of the year and the base of its economy is adventure tourism. The village has lodging, restaurants and food outlets, public internet, library, ATM, telephone booth, pharmacy and health food store, buses with fixed schedules to Xalapa, Coatepec, Cardel and the Port of Veracruz, the closest cities, and is 1.5 kilometers away from the PD no. 1 where volunteers will stay. Work may include: gardening, construction, carpentry, cooking and graphic design for planting, cleaning, plowing, cutting, harvesting, selecting, for 6 minimum working hours: hard, serious, committed and responsible work, from Sunday to Friday, we celebrate the Sabbath.
Accommodation for WWOOFers: There is a finished and equipped room at PD. 1 to share and sleep in sleeping bags and cots and the open terrain is large and safe enough for room tents. WWOOFers have to bring their own bedding, and sleeping bags; we have two tents available to borrow.
Food: We provide three daily vegetarian meals; the menu includes some cheese and organic eggs. All food is freshly prepared and is clean, fresh; most of it is organic and regional. If necessary the WWOOFers must provide and prepare special dietary meals. It is forbidden to cook meat on the property.
