Profile Information

What is your previous experience with Organic Agriculture and Sustainable Development?
I studied in Oaxaca, Mexico in a program through the School for International Training. The focus of my program was "grassroots development and social change". I visited many organizations that were working towards social justice and sustainable development. in particular i spent 5 weeks on my own doing a research project while staying with a family in a small mixtec community in Oaxaca. i worked with local farmers and with members of a campesino run organization called CEDICAM. This amazing group works with small farmers in the area to create a more sustainable type of agriculture. They promote and teach farmers organic and sustainable farming methods including: rain water collection, reforestation, building small greenhouses, seed saving techniques, crop rotation, crop diversification, vermiculture (lombricultura), and a wide variety of organic methods for fertilization as well as pest control. This growing season i am working as an apprentice on an organic farm in philadelphia where i have worked very hard and learned much about organic and intensive small scale farming methods.
