I wish I had some more info to give you, however I just joined the network myself and I haven't even picked/ contacted a farm yet!
My boyfriend and I just came to Mexico sort of on a whim with our total life savings (a pittance) and we are just hanging out in Puebla looking for jobs and contacting farms... so it sounds like you a leg up on us.
... actually I just though of something... I've been doing blog searches on the internet typing in the specific name of the farm, and I stumbled into some interesting commentary son a few farms... so you might try that!
Thanks for the info... we just got into contact with a project in valle de bravo... so we are pretty excited.
Ok... so far we haven't traveled too many places (been here about a week or so) but we started in Mexico City which many travelers steer away from, but I think it is wonderful. I have been there twice now, and have never had any problems. Just use common sense, be a little wary of the taxis (have a hotel call one for you) etc. We mostly used the subway, and it was just fine and easy.
We just got to Puebla a few days ago, and it is beautiful... I haven't been to many places in the interior of Mexico, but this town is steeping with history and culture. Also, just 20-30 mins away is the town of Cholula, which we haven't seen yet, but have friends who lived in Puebla that highly recommend it. That is where many of the students from the universities around here go to drink/ party, and there is an amazing temple with a church built on top... I'd definitely recommend coming to these areas.
Finally, I speak decent Spanish (less than I should for how long I have studied the language) but my boyfriend speaks very little and he/ we ahve gotten along fine. In Mexico city all of the hostels have english speaking staff, and here in Puebla they seem to speak mostly Spanish but I've noticed several other travelers who speak very little and get along fine.
The main thing is that mostly everyone in Mexico is really friendly and kind if you treat them with respect and try your best.
Tell your mom not to worry (our parents were freaked too!) I think you wont be traveling in the dangerous areas (the border) and as long as you dont get into drugs or something no one should have a reason to mess with you....
Hope this answers some of your questions... and good luck! Let me know if you have more, or any new insights.
p.s. I looked up wwoofing on facebook and there are a few groups with info walls etc... so you might check that for some more info/ insight from more experienced wwoofers.
