What is your previous experience with Organic Agriculture and Sustainable Development?
I have been farming/organic gardening and learning permaculture for the past 5 years in many different ways. The first farm I worked at that motivated me so much to stay on this path of growing food was a farm owned by a 94 year old farmer. He had beautiful property on a creek bed where he specializes in growing lots of mineral rich greens and root crops. There, I was introduced to the magic of growing food and the joy of providing it for others. I also worked at a natural foods cooperative that had their own farm. Heritage Point, it was called, was an even larger operation than where I got started. We used a tractor and did very long row vegetables as well as two full sized green houses and organic free ranged eggs. It was very busy, hard, fast work but I learned so much and got fast at farming so to speak. I also worked at an inner city urban farm and outreach program. This special place was my first introduction to permaculture, bio intensive, bio dynamic, soil restoration, and urban farming. I loved it. I knew this was more of the approach I wanted to take growing food. My next step was to escape the cold east coast winters and head to the tropics to learn more about tropical fruit trees and permaculture. I was so blessed to receive an internship right away on Kauai, Hawaii. I worked and lived for two years on a 6 acre permaculture/bio intensive farm. I studied under a permaculture teacher as well as a 75 year old organic farmer who has been farming successfully in Hawaii for 30 years and started the Hawaiian Organic Farmers Association. This was the most thorough education I have ever gotten in my live. We had a quarter acre market garden that fed 6 plus people as well as one market presence a week. The rest of the land was planted in a large food forest. I loved this and so enjoyed getting to know all of the tropical plants and their roles and how they support each other.
