Profile Information

What is your previous experience with Organic Agriculture and Sustainable Development?
I am a farm manager on a 100 acre organic vegetable farm in the Pacific Northwest of the United States (http://www.gatheringtogetherfarm.com/). As Logistics Coordinator I play an active role throughout our production cycle. This includes field prep, planting, cultivation, fertilization, harvest, and distribution through 8 local farmers markets, farm direct retail customers, and our wholesaler, Organically Grown Company (www.organicgrown.com). I have taken both introductory soil science and horticulture classes through my local University. I have experience building compost in both small garden and production farm scenarios, and have a good understanding of the soil food web.
What are your reasons for joining WWOOF Mexico?
Learning about sustainable living and agriculture, Getting to know Mexico better
What do you want the farms and fellow WWOOFers to know about you?
My name is Joey Staub, and I am an organic vegetable farmer in the U.S. state of Oregon. My partner Hannah and I are planning to be in the area around Lake Atitlan starting sometime in January. We read your listing on the WWOOFing website and have interest in doing a work stay on your farm. In total we plan to spend 6 to 8 months traveling through Central America, and have hopes of spending 2-3 months of that time in your region. A little background. Hannah and I are 30 and 32 years-old respectively, and have been married for three years. For the last five years Hannah has worked in development at a homeless and runaway youth shelter here in our community of Corvallis, Oregon. There she has worked to develop donor support and community connections to help fund the various programs that Jackson Street Youth Services offers. During college Hannah spent a year working at La Buena Tierra in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Hannah spent that year living with a local family and is fluent in Spanish. For the past four years I have worked on a 100 acre certified organic vegetable farm. At Gathering Together Farm we grow more than 50 types and 200 varieties of fruits and vegetables. My position as the Logistics Coordinator follows the production process from ground preparation to Farmer's Market. During college my studies, an interest in learning Spanish took me to Chillan, Chile where I studied at a local university, and lived with a host family for a semester. Hannah and I are both interested in sustainable living, and for sometime I have desired to learn more about designing and managing permaculture landscapes. Together we have raised a small flock of layer hens in our backyard, and run a cover crop rotation trying to improve some fairly neglected soils. In addition to learning about local agriculture and sustainable living in your area through the WWOOFing program, we also desire to seek out volunteer opportunities within the local community where our time can be put to good use, with hearts for peace and justice as our primary motivators.
