What is your previous experience with Organic Agriculture and Sustainable Development?
My experience has been through public relations, by way of documenting and featuring individuals active in the green movement. I produced a series for public access T.V. in Arizona during the 2006 elections focusing on local candidates who choose to live with a sustainable approach and implement programs to promote this legislatively. I then became producer for the A.M. Arizona show on AZ-TV in which I ensured many segments that focused on green living, farming, architecture and environmental issues. I have experience gardening while living in Hawaii and have worked for the Nature Conservancy on Palmyra Atoll, a very fragile eco-system in the middle of the Pacific, as a cook for the science crews. I Have hands on experience building trail & working with livestock in Grand Canyon National Park (simply put, I’ve shoveled tons of dirt & rock in extreme conditions with some stubborn but fantastic creatures).
What are your reasons for joining WWOOF Mexico?
Learning about sustainable living and agriculture, Getting to know Mexico better
What do you want the farms and fellow WWOOFers to know about you?
I have a very diverse background and am looking to utilize my skills while re-connecting with the Earth and understanding the need for future sustainable living practices. I started as a back country river guide in Grand Canyon National Park in 1991. The “job” is an adventure unto itself and you inevitably become an amateur geologist, botanist, natural historian & interpreter, entertainer and guide through rugged, beautiful and a sometimes dangerous environment. As a guide I developed a profound caring about the natural environment and feeling of responsibility & stewardship toward the land. This stems from a love of the natural world and a lifestyle that accommodates that. I also worked on rivers in Utah: The San Juan & Green Rivers as well as the Salmon & Snake rivers in Idaho and I fell in love with the idea of alternative living and a healthy eco-system. I have volunteered with the Nez Pierce Indians at the Wolf Education & Research Center in Idaho in 1999 when the re-introduction of Wolves was in its infant stages in the North Western U.S. I understand that outdoor work is tough and you are always exposed to the elements but I found it exhilarating and spiritually inspiring. My curiosity of the natural world led me to the sea and in 1999 I began working on Sail Boats throughout the Caribbean and United States. I worked for Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute as a cook on a research vessel conducting a variety of Marine Biology Studies and realized how fragile and vulnerable our eco-systems are. Mean while back in the Grand Canyon trying to find my “land legs” again, I started building trail on a crew utilizing Pack Mules and Pack Mule Strings. I was qualified to work with livestock because I have experience living on-site and co-managing equestrian centers: maintaining and caring for barn, horses, feed, meds, paddocks, tack, grounds and many other tasks that go along with it. I am very good with handling livestock and love working with animals.I spent the past 4 months travelling in Asia focusing on the journey with in the self. I studied Yoga: Hatha, Ashtanga, Pranayama, Mantra & various meditation practices. With great reflection I feel I would like to embark on a journey learning and promoting sustainable agriculture, farming, gardening and living. I would love to be considered as a candidate for apprenticeship or helping with projects on Organic Farms throughout Central America. I lived in Costa Rica for 3 months in 2009 and was blown away by the natural beauty there. I believe I have a lot to contribute or I would not want to impose on your time. Thank you very much. Mucho Gusto-Pura Vida!
Hi Leslie,
Thanks for writing. Your experience has some things in common with my own, backpacking in the Grand Canyon and visiting the Nez Perce area. You may be interesting in helping us with the school garden project here, once you´ve had a chance to do some weeding & composting in Rancho Esquipulas seed-saving garden...
What is your time schedule?
Saludos, kippy

Best of luck finding a great place to WWOOF!
